Handmade Star Trek Phasers
After much digging around in the basement, K found his carefully packed away handmade Star Trek phasers. And apparently, he was about 13 or 14 years old (not 7) when he made these. This first phaser is from Star Trek: The Next Generation. With the help of his grandfather, a carpenter by trade, he carved it out of wood and then hand-painted it. And looking at these pictures, I think he got pretty close considering his age!
The second phaser may not look as impressive, but actually it's a metal cast phaser from the movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. K carved it out of wood first, made a mold, and then filled it with aluminum in his school's shop class. For pictures of the actual device, check out this link.
I'm in total awe that K actually made his own replicas after seeing them on TV and in movies! How cool was it to be the only kid on the block with his own set of phasers, long before the toys were available in stores? Wonder what other interesting tidbits I'll discover about K in that basement... ;)

Wow, my special guy also made awesome replicas as a kid. I will have to show him these to find out if we have any tazers stashed away in the apartment...
