3 Totally Practical, Pinterest-Unworthy Crochet Projects

Since the holidays (including Halloween) last year, I've been working on one ambitious project after another. I'm 2 seconds away from finishing the first Christmas stocking and I've started on the very, very late Christmas present for Sophia, but this weekend I just wanted to take a break from all the stress. In the month of February, I've been recovering from the whole family being sick, rushing to complete our tax returns, and planning an early babymoon (first trip without Dexter!!). I finally feel like I have my feet under me again, so why not relax with some just-for-fun, spur-of-the-moment DIY projects? Introducing... my totally boring, nothing impressive, but very useful crochet creations.

Design aesthetic? Color selection? Nope, just git 'er done!
The first thing that came to mind was a soda cozy. One of my pet peeves is having to touch cold things (weird, huh?), so on the rare occasion that I indulge in fizzy pop, I'd like to protect my overly sensitive fingers. It started off just being a circular band, but the heavy can kept slipping so K suggested capping the bottom and also adding a lip at the top for a comfortable grip. Boom, there ya go! I had also recently purchased Dexter a nice pair of toddler sunglasses that needed a case. Nothing heavy-duty; just some basic scratch protection. Then I realized that my own giant sunglasses didn't have a container (which is why I usually leave them in the car), so of course I had to make a bag for them as well.

This reminds me of the phone cozies I made to supplement my casual running hobby. Before all those winter storms hit and jogging outside became unbearable, I banged out a smartphone cozy for the stroller that is the perfect length for wearing headphones. That way I could listen to my Zombies Run! 5K Training app (which I actually completed!) and push Dexter at the same time. No baby on board? Not a problem; let's make a second, over-the-shoulder strap version for when it's just me and the dog. No fancy armband for me... I'm going with the DIY solution that cost me less than a dollar and two evenings in front of the TV. :P

The funny thing is that, as satisfied as I am with these creations, they're totally plain and not the slightest bit Pinterest-worthy (or Ravelry-worthy), in my opinion. Yes, Pinterest has its share of useful and unattractive projects, but for the most part, I see people pinning lofty goals and dream-spirations. So if any of you are interested in the rough patterns I used to make any of these projects, leave me a comment and I'll find myself proven wrong. :)

As we're looking over your post about practical crafts, my 12 year old notices your label on the phone cozy. "I love people who use the word, 'thingy'." We enjoyed your site.
