So You Wanna Learn Martial Arts?

Speaking of karate, some of you may be wondering, "Is A taking Japanese martial arts because she's a crazed anime fan who loves everything about Japan?" Actually, when I was in college, I started making a "When I Grow Up" list of all the things I wanted to do once I graduated, and learning martial arts was one of the items.

But what kind of fighting style? When I thought of martial arts, Bruce Lee and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came to mind. In fact, it was because I had recently watched Ip Man on Netflix that I remembered my goal from long ago. But after talking to my brother LDK, I found out there are a gazillion kinds of martial arts out there, so he recommended that I first figure out my reasons for pursuing the sport in the first place. Umm, because it's freaking cool? ^_^;;

According to LDK, if you want something very practical for self-defense in a real-world fight, you might consider Krav Maga, Jiu-Jitsu, or some form of mixed martial arts. Hmm, I'd rather carry a gun (see bonus section). My main goals are just to have fun and get exercise. (Much like my hobbies, I have "exercise ADHD" as well and can't stand monotonous sports like running, etc.)

Location is also important. Much like a gym, if the facility is too far away from home, I'm not going to be as motivated to attend. So all my research was trashed because Google Maps says the closest place is a Japanese karate dojo, so I signed up for a trial period and have stuck with it ever since.

Question:
Have you ever been inspired to do something because of a movie?

I know! Not sure if my plastic Swiffer duster is flexible enough to do battle with. ;)
